Museums and Art Galleries in Ibiza

Ibiza is far more than beaches and nightlife. Discover the museums and galleries that reveal the island's cultural richness, from ancient Phoenician art to contemporary installations by international artists.

Ibiza and Formentera Archaeological Museum

The Ibiza Archaeological Museum is probably the most important museum on the island and one of the most relevant in the Mediterranean for understanding Phoenician-Punic civilization. Located at the Cathedral Square, in the heart of Dalt Vila, its rooms house a collection spanning more than three thousand years of island history.

The Punic Collection

The museum's centerpiece is undoubtedly the Punic collection. The pieces of extraordinary beauty and historical importance include:

  • Terracotta figures of the goddess Tanit
  • Polychrome glass paste amulets
  • Decorated ostrich eggs with ritual motifs
  • Gold jewelry found in the Puig des Molins necropolis

For centuries, Ibiza was a primary religious and commercial center in the Punic world, and this museum proves it with tangible evidence.

Puig des Molins: Underground

A visit to the museum is complemented by the Puig des Molins archaeological site, the largest and best-preserved Punic necropolis in the Mediterranean, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can descend into some of the hypogea (funerary chambers carved into the rock) and experience what a Phoenician-Punic burial was like 2,500 years ago.

It's an overwhelming experience that very few Ibiza visitors know about. If you can only visit one museum on the island, make it this one.

MACE: Museum of Contemporary Art of Eivissa

The MACE occupies a historic building on Ronda de Narcís Puget, in Dalt Vila, and is the island's main contemporary art space. Its permanent collection includes works by artists connected to Ibiza over the decades: from the geometric abstractions of the Ibiza 59 Group to pieces by current creators.

What makes MACE special is not just its collection, but its temporary exhibition program, which rotates several times a year and brings high-level artistic proposals. The museum also organizes workshops, lectures, and educational activities. The museum's terrace offers magnificent views over the rooftops of Dalt Vila and the port.

Puget Museum: Painted Ibiza

Dedicated to the work of Narcís Puget Viñas and Narcís Puget Riquer, father and son, this small museum installed in a 15th-century palace in Dalt Vila is a gem. The watercolors and oils capture an Ibiza that no longer exists: peasants in traditional dress, religious processions, scenes of rural life, and seascapes of extraordinary luminosity.

Beyond its artistic value, the works in the Puget Museum are first-rate ethnographic documents. Through their paintings we can see how Ibizan people dressed, how they worked the land, what farmhouses looked like before tourism. It's a window into the past that perfectly complements a visit to Dalt Vila.

Art Galleries and Alternative Spaces

La Marina neighborhood and the port

Ibiza's gallery scene has experienced notable growth in recent years. In the La Marina neighborhood and the port area, several commercial galleries offer contemporary art by local and international artists. The Virgen Street has become an art walk, with galleries and studios that open their doors especially in summer.

Santa Gertrudis: The Other Artistic Hub

Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, in the geographic center of the island, is the other major artistic hub. This charming village is home to galleries, artist studios, and exhibition spaces in a relaxed and authentic atmosphere. Walking through Santa Gertrudis on a Saturday morning, having a coffee in the square, and visiting the galleries is one of the most rewarding cultural experiences in Ibiza.

Unique Cultural Spaces

Ibiza also has spaces that don't fit conventional categories:

  • Es Amunts Interpretation Center: explains the ecology and history of the island's most preserved rural area
  • Defense Towers (18th century): Torre des Savinar and Torre de Portinatx function as historical viewpoints that tell the story of piracy
  • Cathedral Chapter Room: sacred art including Gothic altarpieces, liturgical metalwork, and paintings from the 14th to 18th centuries
  • Ibizan folk architecture: the farmhouses themselves (payesas) are an internationally recognized artistic expression

Ibiza has much more art than most visitors imagine: you just need to know where to look.

Practical Information

  • Archaeological Museum + Puig des Molins: combined ticket available; open Tuesday to Sunday
  • MACE: free admission; Ronda de Narcís Puget, Dalt Vila
  • Puget Museum: free admission; plaza of the same name in Dalt Vila
  • Best museum route: start at the Puget Museum, go up to the Archaeological Museum, and end at MACE (all in Dalt Vila, 2-3 hours)
  • Santa Gertrudis galleries: best on Saturday mornings, when the village comes alive
  • In summer: Dalt Vila galleries organize open-door evenings with wine and music
  • Tip: ask at tourist offices for the monthly cultural agenda — there's always some opening or temporary exhibition
