How On-Duty Pharmacies Work in Ibiza
In Ibiza, as throughout Spain, there is always at least one pharmacy open 24 hours a day. The shift system rotates among pharmacies in each area, ensuring you always have access to medication, no matter what time it is.
To find out which pharmacy is on duty, you have several options:
- Door sign: all pharmacies are required to display the nearest on-duty pharmacy when they close
- Phone 112: they will inform you immediately
- Balearic Pharmacists Association website: updated online consultation
During high season, pharmacies in tourist areas often extend their usual hours to handle increased demand.
Main Pharmacies on the Island
Ibiza City (Eivissa)
The highest concentration of pharmacies is located in the center and port area:
- Farmacia Tur Viñas — Abad y Lasierra street (one of the most central)
- Pharmacies on Madrid Street and España Avenue (Figueretas area, very popular among tourists)
Rest of the Island
- Santa Eulària: Farmacia Roselló, Sant Jaume Street
- Sant Antoni: pharmacies on Passeig de ses Fonts and Ample Street
- Sant Joan de Labritja: one pharmacy in the village with on-duty service at least once a week
Over-the-Counter Medications
At Spanish pharmacies you can buy without a prescription:
- Paracetamol and ibuprofen
- Antihistamines
- Pharmacy-grade sunscreen
- Sunburn creams
- Mosquito repellent
For antibiotics and other specific medications you will need a prescription, even from a local doctor.
Public Health Centers
Ibiza has a network of Primary Care Centers distributed throughout the island:
- Vila Health Center — Ibiza city, next to Hospital Can Misses (the largest)
- Santa Eulària Health Center
- Sant Antoni Health Center
- Sant Josep Health Center
- Sant Joan Health Center
- Es Viver Health Center
Centers operate Monday to Friday from approximately 8:00 to 20:00. You can book an appointment in advance by calling the center or go directly if it's urgent. Citizens with a European Health Insurance Card or Spanish Social Security card have the right to free care.
In summer, IB-Salut (Balearic health service) typically opens additional Continuous Care Points (PAC) in tourist areas. These PAC operate in the afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Hospital Can Misses: 24-Hour Emergency
Hospital Can Misses is the only public hospital serving Ibiza and Formentera, located on the Sant Antoni road, just minutes from Ibiza city center.
- Phone: 971 39 70 00
- Emergency: 24 hours, every day
- Specialties: surgery, ICU, radiology, laboratory
For highly specialized cases that cannot be treated on the island, there is a transfer protocol to Son Espases Hospital in Palma de Mallorca, either by medical helicopter or medical aircraft.
Private Clinics and Travel Insurance
For those who prefer private healthcare or have travel insurance, the main options are:
- Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Ibiza city) — the most comprehensive: emergency services, specialists, surgery and hospitalization
- Private medical centers in Sant Antoni and Santa Eulària — consultations without an appointment
If you're traveling with international travel insurance, always carry your insurance company's phone number and policy number. Most private clinics can bill your insurance directly.
It's also a good idea to bring a copy of your medical history if you have any chronic conditions or medication allergies. Knowing where to turn if you feel unwell is an essential part of a well-planned vacation.
