If you have been thinking of Ibiza in late October as the island after the party, think again: this week the action moves to the water. Between a free marine science forum in Ibiza Town, an open-water swimming weekend, an 86-kilometre walk around Formentera and a handful of boat trips still sailing from the ports, Ibiza by the sea is the best way to spend the next seven days. The Mediterranean is still warm enough to swim, the light is soft and golden, and the crowds are gone.
Here is how to plan a week around the coast, with the dates, prices and practical details we have on the calendar right now.
Marine Forum Ibiza and Formentera: Free Talks at MACE (21–22 October)
The Marine Forum Ibiza and Formentera 2026 brings scientists, institutions and social organisations together to discuss the biggest challenges facing the Mediterranean, and the conservation solutions on the table. Sessions run on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October, starting at 09:00, at the MACE – Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Eivissa in Dalt Vila, and entry is free.
You do not need to be a marine biologist to enjoy it. If you live here, or simply love the island's water, it is a rare chance to hear first-hand how the sea around Ibiza and Formentera is studied and protected, including the Posidonia meadows (the underwater grass that keeps the water so clear). Combine it with a wander through the walled old town afterwards; the museum sits right at the top, with views over the harbour.
IbiziOWS: Open Water Swimming Weekend (23–25 October)
For something more active, IbiziOWS – Ibiza Open Water Swimming is a social and sporting event with two distances, roughly 5 km and 2.5 km, plus side activities on shore. It runs from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October, with the main programme starting at 09:00 on the Friday. Entry is listed from €210, so it is aimed at committed swimmers, but it is also a spectacular thing to watch from the shoreline: dozens of caps bobbing across a calm autumn bay.
Not ready to swim 5 km? The sea is still around the low 20s in degrees Celsius at this time of year, which is very comfortable for a morning dip. Pick a sheltered cove, bring a towel and a flask of something hot, and you will have the beach almost to yourself.
Walk Around Formentera in 4 Days (22–25 October)
Across the water, the organised Walk around Formentera in 4 Days covers 86 km of coastline on foot between 22 and 25 October, passing cliffs, hidden beaches, pine forest and long stretches of sand. It is listed as a free event, and even if you cannot commit to the whole route, Formentera is perfect for walkers in autumn: flat, signposted and wonderfully quiet.
Getting there is easy. Ferries from Ibiza port with Balearia take about 30 minutes, with tickets listed from €27.50 to €55 depending on fare, and the Santa Eulalia – Formentera ferry is listed from €24 to €52. Winter timetables are thinner than summer ones, so always check the operator's schedule for your day and book the return crossing before you set off.
Boat Trips and Sunset Cruises Still Sailing
You can still get out on the water this week, as several operators are running daily. A few that are currently on the calendar:
- Natural Park Aquarium Boat Trip (Capitan Nemo, from San Antonio, 11:00): a three-hour trip along the north-west coast to the Cap Blanc aquarium, listed from €20 to €39.
- Cala Salada Cruise (Float Your Boat, 11:00): a relaxed cruise with swim stops, listed from €20 to €45.
- San Antonio to Es Vedrà Boat Trip (Capitan Nemo, 10:00): four hours down the west coast past a string of coves, from €23 to €45.
- Salvador Sunset Trip (17:00): golden hour on calm water, from €45 to €80.
Autumn sailing has its own charm. The sea is flatter, the light is warmer and the coves are not crowded. Do confirm departures the day before, as smaller boats can change plans with the weather.
Dry Land Alternatives: Caves, Tapas and Sunset Sessions
If the wind picks up, there is plenty to do onshore. The Cova de Can Marçà near Sant Miquel is a cave descent with lit formations, listed from €9 to €15 and a good family option. In Ibiza Town, the dTAPASxIBZ tapas contest runs from 21 to 25 October, with tapas priced from €5 to €10 in participating bars: a delicious excuse to eat your way through the old town between sea activities.
And when the sun goes down, the Café del Mar Sunset Session in Sant Antoni continues with free entry and resident DJs from 18:00, a mellow Balearic soundtrack for the last light of the day. Sunset falls shortly before 19:00 this week and an hour earlier once the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, so aim to be settled with a drink by 18:00.
Practical Tips for a Week by the Sea
- Pack layers. Mornings and evenings on a boat can be cool; a light windproof jacket is a good idea.
- Check the weather and the schedule. Operators run reduced timetables in late October and adjust to conditions.
- Book ahead for ferries and organised events. Entry to IbiziOWS and some boat trips is limited.
- Use the free options. The Marine Forum, the Formentera walk and the sunset session cost nothing, so you can mix budget and splurge days.
- Stay on marked paths and anchor responsibly. The Posidonia meadows around the island are fragile; avoid dropping anchor over the dark seagrass patches.
Make the Most of the Calm Before Winter
Late October is one of the best-kept secrets on the island. The water is still swimmable, the cafés have space at the table and the calendar is full of things that have nothing to do with the summer rush. Browse the full list of events on Ibiza Calendar, pick a sea-facing plan for each day, and enjoy the island at its most peaceful.
