The Big Party of Ibiza City

If Ibiza had to choose just one festival to define itself, it would undoubtedly be the Festes de la Terra, the patron saint celebrations of Ibiza city held during the first half of August.

For more than a week, the island's capital transforms into a stage of continuous celebration with concerts at the port, parades along the seafront promenade, sporting competitions, children's activities, markets, exhibitions and spectacular fireworks on the big day. August fifth, the feast day of the Mare de Déu de les Neus (Virgin of the Snows), patron saint of Ibiza, marks the climax of the festival.

The History: Five Centuries of Celebration

The Festes de la Terra have their roots in medieval religious celebrations honoring the Virgin of the Snows, whose image has presided over Ibiza's cathedral since the fourteenth century.

Legend tells that a miraculous snowfall in mid-August on Rome's Mount Esquiline marked the place where the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore should be built. This tradition traveled to Ibiza with the devotion of sailors and merchants. Over the centuries, the celebrations grew richer with popular elements, becoming the multifaceted festivals we know today, where the sacred and the profane coexist in perfect harmony.

The Program: Something for Everyone

The Festes de la Terra program is so extensive that it's impossible to attend everything. The agenda spreads throughout the day:

Mornings: Sports

  • Regattas at the port
  • Popular races
  • Futsal tournaments
  • Swimming competitions

Afternoons: Entertainment

  • Processions with giants and big-headed figures
  • Children's workshops for crafts and painting
  • Ball pagès (traditional Ibizan dance) exhibitions in the Town Hall square

Evening and Night: Concerts

  • Free concerts at the seafront promenade (pop, rock, jazz, flamenco, electronic)
  • Main concert each night at the fairground venue

The Maritime Procession and the Big Day

August fifth is the big day and begins with a solemn mass in the cathedral, presided over by the image of the Mare de Déu de les Neus adorned with fresh flowers.

After the mass, the procession winds through the streets of Dalt Vila descending to the port, where the Virgin's image boards a decorated boat for the maritime procession. Dozens of decorated vessels accompany the boat on a route around the bay that is one of the most beautiful spectacles of the Ibizan summer.

The maritime procession on August 5th, viewed from the port terraces, is one of those moments that makes you understand why Ibiza is special.

The Fireworks: The Grand Finale

The night of August fifth culminates with the fireworks display launched from the port. Without exaggeration, it's one of the finest pyrotechnic spectacles in the Mediterranean.

For twenty to twenty-five minutes, Ibiza's sky lights up with cascades of color, explosions synchronized with music and special effects. The walls of Dalt Vila serve as a backdrop, reflecting the flashes off their centuries-old stones. Thousands of people watch the spectacle from boats anchored in the bay, creating a festive scene that never fails to move you.
