What is Coasteering?
Coasterering is one of those activities that, once you try it, you understand why it has become one of the most sought-after adventure experiences in Ibiza. It consists of actively navigating a stretch of coastline, combining open-water swimming, rock climbing, water jumps and cave exploration.
All this equipped with wetsuits, helmets and life jackets, and always accompanied by professional guides who know every rock, every current and every safe jumping point. It is a way to connect with Ibiza's coastal nature in an intense, fun way with a good dose of adrenaline.
What Coasteering Combines
- Open-water swimming between cliffs
- Climbing and scrambling on low-height rock formations
- Jumps into the water from different heights (2 to 10 meters)
- Exploration of caves and natural tunnels
- Traversals through natural pools among the rocks
The Northern Coast: Perfect Terrain
The northern coast of Ibiza, between Portinatx and Sant Miquel, offers ideal conditions for coasteering. The cliffs here vary in height, from two-meter platforms perfect for the more cautious to ten-meter jumps for the bravest.
The limestone has been eroded by the sea, creating natural passages, ledges, tunnels and pools between the rocks that make the journey one continuous adventure. The water in this area is especially clean and deep at the base of the cliffs, ensuring safe jumps at points marked by guides.
A Typical Coasteering Session
The experience usually lasts between two and three hours and begins with a safety briefing on land where the guide explains basic jumping, swimming and climbing techniques, plus group communication signals.
Once equipped, the group of six to ten people accesses the coast and begins the journey. Every few meters there is a decision to make: do you jump from this three-meter rock or prefer to swim down? Do you dare tackle the submerged tunnel or go around the outside? That freedom of choice is part of the charm: each participant can adapt the intensity to their comfort level.
The Jumps: The Highlight
Undoubtedly, jumping into the sea is the moment that generates the most excitement. Routes include several jumping points with progressive heights:
- Easy level: 1-2 meter platforms (perfect for warming up)
- Medium level: 3-5 meter jumps (most of the group does these)
- High level: 7-10 meter points (for the bravest)
The guide always jumps first to check conditions and demonstrate the correct technique: body vertical, arms against your body, feet-first entry. The sensation of flying over the turquoise Mediterranean water with cliffs in the background is absolutely electrifying.
No one forces you to jump if you don't want to. There is always a safe alternative to navigate around each point. Coasteering is about having fun, not pressure.
