Benirràs: The Ritual of Drums at Sunset

If there is a moment that defines Ibiza's free spirit, it happens every Sunday evening in summer at Benirràs. As the sun begins to descend toward the horizon, the drummers settle on the sand, start playing, and gradually, hundreds of people join in the rhythm.

It's a ritual that has been repeating for decades, a spontaneous event that has become one of the island's most cherished traditions. As someone who has lived this since childhood, I can tell you it never loses its magic.

Benirràs is located on Ibiza's northern coast, in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja. The road descends through a beautiful valley, between carob and olive fields, until it reaches the beach.

The Beach and Its Mystical Rock

Benirràs is a beach of shingle and coarse sand, surrounded by green hills covered in pine trees. It's not the most comfortable beach for sunbathing, but it has a wild beauty that makes it unforgettable.

Cap Bernat: The Finger of God

In the center of the bay, emerging from the water like a giant finger pointing to the sky, rises Cap Bernat, a spectacular rock formation that locals call the Finger of God.

This rock is the center of all attention during the sunset ritual, as the sun sets right behind it, creating a dramatic silhouette that seems designed by a divine set designer. It's an iconic image of Ibiza.

My recommendation: arrive around five in the afternoon on a summer Sunday, find a spot on the shingle, and let yourself be swept away by the music and magic. You don't need to know how to dance or play an instrument: you just need the desire to feel something different.

Drum Sundays

The tradition was born in the seventies, when hippies from northern Ibiza started gathering here to celebrate sunset with music. What began as an informal gathering gradually became an increasingly popular event.

The atmosphere is unique and difficult to describe. The drummers, sitting in a circle on the sand, set a hypnotic rhythm that grows in intensity as the sun descends. People dance barefoot on the shore, children run around, and there's a sense of community that transcends cultures and languages.

When the sun finally disappears, the rhythm reaches its climax and everyone applauds. It's a moment of collective joy that sends shivers down your spine.

The Hippie Essence of Ibiza

Benirràs is perhaps the last bastion of the hippie spirit that put Ibiza on the map. In the markets next to the beach you can find handmade crafts, bohemian clothing and jewelry that recalls that era.

  • Artisan market: craft stalls, bohemian clothing and jewelry on Sundays
  • Drum ritual: summer Sundays from 5:00 PM onwards
  • Beach restaurant: simple cuisine; try the salad with goat cheese and honey
  • Homemade sangria: the perfect complement to your afternoon
  • Photography: Cap Bernat silhouetted against the sunset is the most iconic image

Practical Information

  • How to get there: road from Sant Joan to Sant Miquel, signposted turn-off to Benirràs
  • Parking: very limited on Sundays; arrive before 4:00 PM or come by taxi
  • Drum day: summer Sundays (June-September), from 5:00 PM onwards
  • Beach type: shingle; bring something padded to sit on

Benirràs is Ibiza without filters, Ibiza without pretense, Ibiza in its freest and most beautiful expression. Come on a Sunday and let yourself go.
