Adlib Fashion: The Ibizan Style That Conquered the World

Born from the fusion of payesa tradition and hippie freedom, adlib fashion is far more than white clothing. Discover its history, designers, and why it remains Ibiza's most recognizable style.

What is Adlib Fashion: Freedom to Dress

Adlib comes from the Latin expression "ad libitum," which means "at your pleasure" or "as you wish." It is the very essence of this fashion movement born in Ibiza: there are no strict rules, no corsets or impositions, only the freedom to dress with naturalness and elegance.

Adlib fashion is characterized by:

  • Use of natural fabrics: cotton, linen, silk
  • White and light colors predominating
  • Artisanal embroidery, lace and delicate details
  • Loose and flowing silhouettes that move with the body and the breeze

But reducing adlib fashion to "white clothing from Ibiza" would be a serious mistake. Over more than five decades, adlib has evolved enormously, incorporating color, new textures, and the vision of designers who have known how to reinvent it without betraying its essence. Today it is a registered trademark, an internationally recognized fashion week, and a living cultural heritage.

The Origins: When Hippies and Payesa Traditions Met

The history of adlib fashion begins in the 1960s, when the hippie community settled in Ibiza started creating their own clothing. Foreign designers, fascinated by the fabrics and embroidery of traditional Ibizan garments, began to fuse payesa techniques with Oriental, African, and bohemian influences.

The Pioneers

Yugoslav princess Smija Mihailovic was one of the first to shape this movement. Settled in Ibiza since the 1960s, she created collections that combined the whiteness of the payesa shirt with cuts inspired by Moroccan caftans and Indian saris.

Journalist and promoter Sonia Ruíz was the one who coined the term "adlib" and organized the first fashion shows, transforming what was an informal trend into a movement with its own identity.

In 1971, the first adlib fashion show was held at the Pikes Hotel in Sant Antoni, and it has not stopped growing since. Figures like Ursula Andress and Grace Kelly allowed themselves to be photographed wearing adlib pieces, catapulting Ibizan style to worldwide fame.

The Designers Who Defined Adlib

Throughout the decades, numerous designers have contributed to defining and evolving adlib fashion:

  • Tony Bonet: the most recognizable name—he has dressed brides from around the world and his collections are exported to luxury boutiques in Europe, America, and Asia
  • Vintage Ibiza: has managed to make adlib a global brand, with its own stores and presence in major international department stores
  • Charo Ruiz: her lace creations are true works of textile art
  • Virginia Vald: has brought a more contemporary and urban vision to the movement

What they all share is a commitment to craftsmanship. Adlib garments do not come from mass factories: they are sewn, embroidered, and finished by hand, often in workshops on the island itself. Each piece has something unique about it.

The Adlib Fashion Show: Annual Meeting with Ibizan Style

Each year, typically in June, Ibiza celebrates the Adlib Fashion Show, the most important fashion event on the island and one of the most unique in Spain. Established and emerging designers present their collections in spectacular locations: the bastion of Santa Llúcia in Dalt Vila, the gardens of a hotel with sea views, or the port esplanade.

The Adlib Fashion Show is not just a runway show: it is a cultural event that reaffirms Ibizan identity and projects it to the world. Fashion journalists, international buyers, and influencers gather to discover new proposals. It is a moment of collective pride for an island that has been dictating its own fashion for more than half a century without asking permission from anyone.

Practical Information

  • Where to buy authentic adlib: designer shops in Ibiza City (port area and Dalt Vila), Santa Gertrudis, and Santa Eulària
