Packing for Ibiza: What You Really Need
After welcoming hundreds of friends and family over the years, I've developed a sixth sense for knowing what they'll wish they'd brought and what ends up being excess baggage.
Ibiza enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate, but each season has its own quirks. Here's my guide with local knowledge.
Summer: June to September
Summer in Ibiza is hot, with temperatures around 30 degrees during the day and rarely dropping below 20 at night. The sea breeze makes the heat more bearable, but the sun really packs a punch.
Essential summer clothing
- Swimsuits: at least two so you can alternate while one dries
- Short-sleeved t-shirts, lightweight dresses, shorts
- Natural fabrics like cotton or linen (they breathe much better than synthetics)
- A sarong, essential for the beach
- At least one slightly dressier outfit for dining out or going out at night
White is the island's signature color. If you want to feel like an adopted Ibizenco, don't hesitate to pack white pieces.
Summer footwear
- Quality sandals for daytime wear
- Flip-flops for the beach
- Comfortable closed shoes for going out in the evening
- Sport shoes or water shoes with good grip if you're planning hiking or visiting rocky coves (the rocks along Ibiza's coast can be quite sharp)
Must-haves you should never forget
- High SPF sunscreen
- Quality sunglasses
- Hat or cap
- Mosquito repellent (pine forest areas and ponds at dusk are mosquito territory)
- Reusable water bottle (tap water is drinkable although the taste isn't the best)
Spring and Autumn: April-May and October-November
These are my favorite seasons in Ibiza and the weather is simply perfect. Temperatures range between 18 and 25 degrees, with cooler nights that can drop to 14 or 15 degrees.
- Short-sleeved t-shirts for daytime, but always carry a lightweight jacket or hoodie in your backpack
- A thin raincoat, especially in April and October (intense but brief showers)
- Small travel umbrella
- Swimsuit: the sea ranges from 19 to 23 degrees, cool but very pleasant
- Comfortable walking shoes, ideally waterproof if you want to make the most of hiking
Winter: December to March
Ibiza's winter is mild, with daytime temperatures between 10 and 17 degrees. It rarely snows and sunny days are frequent, but wind can make the temperature feel considerably lower.
- Transitional coat
- Wool sweater
- Long pants
- Closed, waterproof shoes
- Sunscreen and sunglasses (the midday sun is still strong even in January)
What You Always Forget and Always Need
- Power adapter if you're coming from outside Europe (Spain uses type F plugs)
- Small waterproof bag to protect your phone and keys at the beach
- Blister patches for your feet (new sandals in summer = guaranteed blisters)
- Motion sickness tablets if you're planning boat excursions
- Packable small backpack for day trips, much more practical than a beach bag
One final tip: don't pack your suitcase to the max on the way there. Ibiza has markets and shops with beautiful Ibizenco-style clothing that you'll definitely want to bring back. Leave room for shopping.
Quick Summary
- Summer: lightweight clothing, swimsuits, high sun protection, mosquito repellent, varied footwear
- Spring/autumn: layering system, raincoat, swimsuit, waterproof shoes
- Winter: transitional coat, wool sweater, closed shoes, sunscreen just the same
- Always: power adapter, waterproof bag, blister patches, packable backpack
- Leave space in your suitcase for shopping at local markets and boutiques
