The Best-Kept Secret of Ibizan Winter

While most tourists arrive in Ibiza during summer seeking sun and beaches, those of us who truly know the island understand that one of its most magical moments happens right in the middle of winter.

Between late January and mid-February, the valley of Santa Agnès de Corona transforms into a natural spectacle of moving beauty: thousands of almond trees bloom at once, covering the landscape with a blanket of white and pink flowers that contrasts with the intense green of the fields and the red of the earth.

The Corona Valley: A Unique Landscape

Santa Agnès de Corona is a small village in the Sant Antoni municipality located in a pla (a closed valley of karstic origin) that is unique in the Balearic Islands. This valley, surrounded by gentle hills covered with Mediterranean forest, has been cultivated for centuries by Ibizan farmers.

They took advantage of its fertile soil and protected microclimate to plant almond trees, fig trees, and cereals. The result is a traditional agricultural landscape of extraordinary harmony, where plots delimited by dry stone walls create a geometric mosaic that changes color with the seasons.

Routes Through the Valley in Bloom

Circular Route from Santa Agnès (the classic)

The most beautiful way to enjoy the flowering is on foot. The simplest route is the circular walk from the village, which circles the valley floor in about five kilometers and an hour and a half of walking.

You leave the village by the path that descends into the valley on the northern side, passing beside the 18th-century church and its white houses with bougainvillea, and soon you find yourself surrounded by almond trees in bloom.

The path is flat and easy, perfect for families. As you progress, almond trees follow one after another, each with its own personality: some completely white, others with pinkish tones, some just beginning to open and others already in full petal explosion.

If there's a light breeze, the petals flutter in the air like fragrant snow. It's a spectacle that touches something deep in the soul and that no photograph can quite capture.

Extended Route to the Cliffs

If you want a longer hike, you can continue from the valley northward to the Es Amunts cliffs. A trail departs from the western end of the valley and climbs through a forested hillside to a natural viewpoint from which you can overlook the entire northern coast.

The panorama is breathtaking: the cliffs fall into the sea from over a hundred meters high, and on stormy days the waves crash against the rock with a force that makes the ground tremble. This section adds about six kilometers more to the route.

Can Cosmi: The Essential Stop

After the hike, Ibizan tradition calls for stopping at Can Cosmi, the legendary bar in the village of Santa Agnès. This bar, which has been the social center of the village for decades, is famous for its pa amb oli (traditional bread with olive oil and tomato) served with:

  • Aged Ibizan cheese
  • Serrano ham
  • Homemade sobrasada (cured sausage)
  • Olives and pickled vegetables

Also ask for a local red wine or hierbas ibicencas (Ibizan herbs liqueur) to complete the experience. It's the perfect way to end a day of hiking among almond blossoms.
